The regular season wrapped up with the Finals at Cachuma race at Lake Cachuma in Santa Barbara County on April 30-May 1.  This was by far the most challenging course of the season with twisty singletrack for all racers and a rock garden for the high school racers.  Add to that the large fields, hot and windy weather, and dusty trails, and the conditions were taxing.  This might be just what our racers needed as many of them had their best races of the season, perhaps peaking at just the right time. This included Daniel Castano riding to a 2nd place finish in the 7th Grade Level 1 Boys race on a borrowed hardtail, Samson Ross riding to his 3rd podium of the year with a 5th place finish in the 8th grade Level 1 Boys race and Jonathan Contes riding to an 11th place finish in the Boys 6th Grade Level 1 race on Saturday.

On Sunday our High School racers got their crack at the course. Thankfully the wind let up and the temps dropped a little, but our racers were ON FIRE! The day started with the JV1 race which saw Stellan Klemmer, or is it “Klemmerman”, rack up his best finish of the year, runner-up, on his new steed. The next race was the Freshman Boys, which has been dominated by our racers Arya Namazie and Nolan Carney this year with each of them either finishing first or second in all the races.  The dynamic of their race made it hard for anyone to break free, and they actually finished 4 wide at the finish line with two other racers…kids do the darndest things!  The girls took over the course next and Maya De Brouwer had her best Varsity race of the year with an impressive 3rd place finish.  Lily Bingham had a solid 7th place finish in the girls Freshman race, scoring vital team points in the process.  The final race of the day saw Philip Klemmer ride to a 7th place finish in the Varsity Boys race.  This was Philip’s last race with LCHS and it was fitting that he get his best Varsity result, he left it all out there!. Philip has been with the program from the very first social ride we put on and he’ll be greatly missed.  Keep pedaling my man!
